Big Gal in Little China...Miss Bak Kwa 2009

One thing that I will always remember from days of living in Singapore is the aromatic smell of the barbequed sweetened meat.

I am not a big fan of pork since younger days..It has to do with that bouncy white stuff between the meats....ewww!

But I will eat this, with bread. It reminds me of good ol days when Papa used to drive us over to Penang and Mummy would buy us bak kwa bread rolls at Gurney Drive.

A very good friend of mine from SQ days took me to Chinatown and we had fishball noodle for dinner. Later on, she recommended that I take the herbal jelly to pacify my very sore and inflammed throat.

It really works, I don't have anymore sore thoat. Just after one day! This is so unbelievable, it has to be tried.

Shokudo @ Raffles City

I had a bento lunch at Shokudo for less than ten dollars...in Singapore City, I tell ya! $7.80 to be exact. So affordable. It is an interesting dining experience. You go thru the receptionist, she hands you a card for your order id and reserved sign for a table of your choosing. You then go thru the stalls and order what you want and it is then entered to the card you got given. Later on you will hand this card to the cashier on the way out.

I bought myself a bento sushi. I didn't think it would be filling but it was. There were four dishes in the box. I got a miso soup, a jelly fish salad and sushi rolls and a tuna sashimi on rice.

Fruit Paradise aka Fruit Tart Shop @ Raffles City ;)

Just want to give a shout out to Fruit Paradise for a might fine display of their desserts, they accept phone orders too. The very kind sales lady allowed me to take photos of their lovely creation. Hats off to you. These are original recipes from Japan. The pastry chef is actually Japanese.

I should be so lucky...lucky lucky me!

Today was Day 2 in Singapore and so I was obligated to take the boy to Lucky Plaza to buy his NDS games. One thing that has not changed in Singapore is that every Filipina and Indonesian maids are still hanging out there on their day off.... LOL ;)

It poured down and to make matters worst, I was grumpy coz I had a sore throat and I have a kid that will only eat western foods ie KFC or McDonalds and so I had to feed him first before I go hunting for my own Asian foods. I might spoon feed him fried rice tonite.... Grrrrr!

So anyway, after we walk endlessly from floors to floors and getting lost in the underpasses; we finally made it to Lucky Plaza, I took him to Macca's. Then we took his McDonald's takeway with him and venture upstairs to find my Hainanese Chicken Rice. Found one... it was fantastic! Look at that glazing...it was superb and I was so hungry and it made me forget about my sorethroat for a while.

I took a pic of some fine look bird hanging around!

High Tea at Royal Plaza @ Scotts

Very dissapointing, maybe I am just tired but the tau hu bakar was less than edible, it was badly burnt and the only dish I enjoyed was the acar, pickled spicy veges. However, the coffee was so gooooooooooood! Maybe tomoz will be a better day but what else does one do when it's raining? Have High Tea of course....though, I rather be having jugs of Singapore Slings.....

In the back, mango and shrimp roll and tahu bakar.... very dissapointed, less than edible...badly burnt!

Front is Pie Tee cups filled with sauteed mengkuang (vegetarian dish)

Such a party pooper!

Pasar Malam Time!

Hi all! Selamat Datang!

Well, I am home, touched down one hour late on Air AsiaX. I supposed that is to be expected on budget airline. I must say though that this will be the last time that I am flying with them. I felt very squashed in the cattle class....never again I say. Plus midnite flight, or in our case 2 am flight out of Melbourne was a killer flight... so tired the next day.

Not tired enough for durian though. My sis bought a load of durians for me and we feasted... Yummy! Plus first nite home, we went to "pasar malam", which is night market and bought street hawker foods.

Okay before that, I was weakened by the smell of satays grilling in the food court at Pavillion so I bought some satay to go.....yup...weak weak me!

Back to dinner story.....yesy yes I went berserk and bought almost everything on sight...

  • Assam Laksa...err, I actually walloped this one before I remembered about taking food photos... will post another time! Oops!
  • Assam Boi drink....so refreshing!
  • Ham chee Ping...with red bean paste
  • Popiah.....
  • Murtabak
  • Chee Chong fun
  • Guava for rojak later...

Good Lord! And this is only Day One....I haven't even travelled north to Penang yet.....heheheheheh! Here are some pix, not in any order...

What is Fruit Mince Pies?

If you are like me, and have never ever touch or tasted a fruit mince pie before, you should go get one now....quickly! It is delicious! OMG! How would I describe it? The biscuit base is crumbly and so yummy and buttery, the fruit compote is sweet and spicy at the same time, not chilli hot and spicy, just aromatic spicy.

You know like it has cinnamon and nutmeg and stuff... I'm eating one right now and I've just bitten into a mandarin or a lime bit...Good Lord, it's like all the citrus food is having a disco in my mouth....I am kicking myself for not daring to try this earlier on.... I mean I have lived overseas since 1987.....err, how long is that? I can't think or count at the moment.... totally focused on this pie! Thank you Lord.....there is six in the pack...yummo...I might have another!

It is Stupendous!!!! Hallelujah!!!!!

Hokkien Noodles

This is my version of cooking Hokkien Noodles, very easy to stirfry up when hungry.

Hokkien Noodles Version 1

Ingredients

I packet egg noodle for two
500grams of meat, ie. chicken, beef, seafood
I packet of beansprouts
Mixed veges, peppers, water chestnut, snow peas
A handful of coriander leaves
2 tablespoon of Thai Fish sauce
I tablespoon of Dark Soy sauce
2 teaspoon of chilli jam aka sambal
2 cloves of garlic
Some chopped french shallots

Method
  1. Heat up oil in wok, sauteed the garlic and onions together till aromatic
  2. Add meat to brown
  3. Add seasoning...ie salt, pepper, fish sauce, chilli jam
  4. Stir fry noodles in wok with all above.
  5. Add veges last, I like mine crunchy, so tossed for few minutes on high heat and voila...it's all ready to eat!
  6. Serve immediately with a side of freshly sliced baby chillies in soy sauce or sambal with lime.

Happy Xmas!

I am slowly getting into the Xmas spirit....winks! Don't get me wrong, I am all about the Xmas buffet and nonstop bubblies....I am just pacing myself....don't panic!

I love December ......hmmmm...

Xmas trees are up, decors everywhere, light galore...and a Big Fat Guy in a red suit is allowed to grab kids in the mall...of course, any other time, he would be in prison!!!!!!

Kids! Stay at home!!! It's probably safer.....and shoppers can have a cry free day shopping... LOL ;)

Oh dearie me.... "how can something so small makes such big loud noises? I must get out of the mall now and have a few bubblies and a slice of cheescake at home.....there there.....little horrors be gone....keep on chanting...I want a cheescake, I want a cheescake...make mine a mixed berry cheesecake......."

I'll be home for Christmas ;)

[Photo attached courtesy of Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur (Winks.. free plug!) Staying there for three weeks. Look out! KL here, I come! ]

*************************************************

Hi there, if you are wondering why the absence of recent posts here, it is because my mind is a bit preoccupied with other stuff, like going home for Xmas holidays. I haven't been starving myself, LOL...never! Nothing and no one comes in between me and my happiness... my food! I am actually saving space....literally, I will tell you why. Anyone who has been to Malaysia will understand.

In a month's time, I will be on Air AsiaX ( Ahem! Free plug here!) flight to Malaysia. That in-flight nasi lemak better be good coz I will blogging about this trip and posting photos here....I am sure it will be fabulous! I will also be travelling up to my hometown Sungai Petani and stopping in Penang during this "food tour". Also on the card is a side trip to Singapore. I can't wait... are you excited yet for me?

My first meal would have to be at a roadside hawker stall. Join me then as I eat, shoot and post ;)

Sky bar at Traders Hotel KL

A bit of background on Malaysia here, it has predominantly Malay population hence the array of delights such as Ramly Burger, Beef Rendang, Nasi Lemak, Satay etc. I know that I will want to eat some Sambal Udang, Ikan Bakar, Sambal Kangkung, Sambal Petai.....oh, I will be in Sambal Heaven ;)

Not forgetting the Chinese dishes, I must also go for the Seafood Hor Fun, Char Kway Teow in Penang, Assam Laksa and Hainanese Chicken Rice. Oh dear, three weeks in Asia, will I be able to capture all this in a photo blog? I will try my hardest leh! The list goes on...Wonton mee, Prawn mee, Curry mee aka Laksa... YUM! Not forgetting Chee Chong Fan, Yong Tau Foo....Popiah and Dim Sum etc.

Not to be outdone, we also have those Mamak stalls that caters things like Tandoori Chicken, Roti Canai, Mee Goreng, Nasi Bryani and Indian rojak....yummy stuff.... the last time I went home, I couldn't get any Pasembur aka Indian rojak... it is the best, I tell you! Okay rojak buah is also good... aiyo...fight fight fight... I could try both dishes in the one sitting? It's gonna be tough.... I might have to propose marriage to a mamak guy!

Marinated Char Siew Pork Ribs

So I am all seafood out this week and for whatever reason, I was craving char siew pork. I am not a port eater but will occassionally eat lean pork. So anyway, I got some ribs, with no fatty bits from the butcher.

These ribs are marinated in soy, sesame oil, chinese five spice and basted in char siew marinade from a jar. The result...is yummo! Really happy with the aromatic smell whafting thru the house too.

Summer is here to stay......Spring, what Spring?

The only thing I like about this hot weather is the summer fruits, err, this is supposed to be Spring? It looks like Summer is here to stay....take a back seat, Spring...Oooh...is it Global Warming, do you think? Is it all hot air?

While you chew on on that thought, take a look at what I have been eating today....oh dear, eating this much fruit in a day is just wrong...I don't care what the dietician said. Lucky for me ..I am eating ice cream too.....can't have my body going into shock, LOL ;) This sure is yummy and cooling!
